When you smile, you are not just showing off the state of your pearly whites, but the state of your gums as well. A healthy beautiful smile comes from having healthy teeth and gums. But what if you, like many others today, suffer from gum disease? If your gums are habitually bleeding, red, and inflamed, you likely need help getting your oral health back on track.

One of the early signs of gum disease, or gingivitis, is bleeding gums. Typically at this stage, they will be inflamed, red, swollen and tender. This happens as bacterial plaque builds up along the gumline and irritates gum tissues. This is typically an easily treatable stage and even reversible as treatment is offered before extensive damage is done.

Unfortunately, if gum disease is allowed to go untreated, it will continue to worsen. Advanced stages cause your gums to recede from the teeth and create pockets where plaque can accumulate. Next, teeth will loosen and fall out as the supportive bone material is lost. While early gum disease can be treated with more frequent dental cleanings and deep cleanings known as scaling and root planing, antibiotics, and stepped-up daily oral hygiene care, more advanced stages may also require gum surgery.

Our dentist, Dr. Michael Kim in Mequon, Wisconsin, is ready to help you get your gum health back on track. We invite you to schedule a gum disease treatment with our skilled dental team by calling 262-241-5558 today.
