Special Events WDA Mission of Mercy 2010 The WDA and WDA Foundation wrapped up their second Mission of Mercy by delivering smiles to 2,038 children and adults – exceeding its pre-event goal of 2,000 patients. The event was held at Sheboygan North High School in Sheboygan, Wis. where the school’s field house was transformed into a large-scale dental facility for two days. The first patients were in line about 18 hours before the doors opened at 6 a.m. on Friday, June 25. The last patient was admitted at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the clinic floor closing around 5:30 p.m. both days. Some 950 volunteers, including 180 dentists, 120 hygienists and about 160 Marquette University School of Dentistry students, were involved in the setup, two treatment days and cleanup of this large-scale oral health care event in Wisconsin. The donated dental care was valued at more than $880,000. Patients received fillings, extractions, cleanings and treatment partials as needed. Guatamala Dental Mission January 2010 Guatemala Medical Relief Project (GMRP) has once again completed a very successful mission to the remote southern Guatemala village of Oliveros. Last year the official number of patients registered by GMRP this year was 1089. To put that into perspective, we saw 800-850 patients each of the previous three years after registering 675 in our first year, 2005. As our mission’s reputation has grown, so has our reach. We had patients coming from as far as 30 miles away, as the crow flies, which means many of our patients traveled for hours to reach us. We also raffled off an electric tooth brush for an accompanying adult. We collected over 100 pounds of candy and donated the candy to the armed forces.
